— Winter Maintenance Guidelines for Laser Sources, Laser Tubes and Water Cooling Systems
As winter temperatures continue to drop, low-temperature environments pose increasing challenges to the stable and safe operation of laser equipment. In particular, laser sources, laser tubes, and internal water-cooling circuits are highly susceptible to freezing. Once freezing occurs, it may lead to cracked pipelines, seal failure, or even irreversible damage to the laser unit itself—resulting in high repair costs and prolonged downtime.
To help users ensure safe winter operation and minimize equipment risks, Foster Laser has compiled the following winter anti-freeze and maintenance guidelines. Please implement these measures in advance.
✅Prepare Anti-Freeze Measures Early to Prevent Freeze Damage
When the ambient temperature approaches or may fall below 0°C (32°F), the deionized or purified water inside the water-cooling system must be replaced with a qualified antifreeze solution.
Important Notes:
📌Damage to laser sources or water-cooling systems caused by freezing is not covered under warranty
📌Anti-freeze measures must be completed before severe cold weather arrives; corrective action taken after freezing may already be too late and result in permanent damage
✅Adjust Chiller Temperature Settings According to Seasonal Conditions
Proper water temperature settings effectively reduce freezing risks and help maintain the laser source in optimal operating condition.
Recommended Temperature Settings:
✨Summer low-temperature water: approx. 27°C
✨Winter low-temperature water: 20–22°C
✨Spring / Autumn low-temperature water: approx. 24–25°C
✨High-temperature water: recommended around 30°C year-round
Excessively low water temperatures may compromise system stability and shorten the service life of the laser source.
✅Antifreeze Selection Recommendations (Key Point)
To ensure system compatibility and long-term operational stability, Foster Laser strongly recommends CLARIANT antifreeze products.
Recommended Models:
1. ANTIFROGEN® N (Ethylene Glycol Based)
Industrial-grade formulation
Toxic to humans
Proper protective measures are required during handling
2. ANTIFROGEN® L (Propylene Glycol Based) – Recommended
Food-grade standard
Safer for human contact
More environmentally friendly and suitable for laser systems
🚫 Strictly Prohibited:
Alcohol-based antifreeze liquids
Antifreeze products with unknown composition, high corrosiveness, or substandard quality
Any equipment damage caused by the use of non-compliant cooling media shall be the sole responsibility of the user.
✅Antifreeze Is Not Intended for Year-Round Use
Antifreeze should not be used as a permanent replacement for deionized or purified water and is recommended only during winter or low-temperature periods.
After winter, please ensure the following steps are completed:
1.Completely drain the antifreeze from the system
2.Thoroughly flush all pipelines with deionized or purified water
3.Resume the use of deionized or purified water as the cooling medium
Proper replacement is essential to prevent residue corrosion and to ensure long-term stable operation of the metal fiber laser cutting machine system.
